A BIKE RACE

I think this is the biggest event to have visited Jarnac since we are here. Le Tour de Poitou-Charentes started one of their days here in our town.
While I do admire the athletes on the Tour de France and love watching the scenery on TV during the race, I am not into the sport otherwise. The French on the other hand, well, they are very engaged. Really great to watch people of all ages get excited about this event.

The set up with all the team busses and start line was up at Place De Gaulle, before they swooped down the hill into Jarnac, over the Charente on to Cognac further.  There was a nice crowd, the race started at Noon, so the restaurants were all empty, except Le Rallye, which is located right off Place De Gaulle.

I too a spot right by Chateau Courvoisier and took this video of the bikers coming down towards the bridge.
The only name I have heard of before is Mark Cavendish, a Brit, and he is the star of this race, very much to the delight of our local expat community here in the area. He seems very nice, taking his time between exiting the team bus and getting his bike, signed plenty of autographs and even talked with a few people.
Obviously I find the sport very approachable and no fences around it, people were able to inspect the impressive hardware and even be seriously close to some of the stars.
can you imagine the logistics behind the Tour de France? I cannot. Just today was animpressive show of volunteers, civil servants and professionals for this 4 day race. The Tour goes on with a much bigger field for a month. Really impressive.

Enjoy the images.
